After a year of life being on hold, it's possible that living through a pandemic has been a time of reflection. Are you feeling ready for new possibilities or at the very least, a change of scenery? If you've been itching to live somewhere else (whether it’s changing cities or moving to a new state), now could be your chance.
Several cities and counties have incentive programs to encourage you to call a new place home through their relocation programs. Some provide plenty of cash for expenses while others offer a mix of perks, discounts and cash to make the move easier financially.
Consider these five cities or states to begin anew.
Northwest Arkansas
If you’ve been dreaming about a simpler life with plenty of hiking and biking trails as well as vibrant cultural offerings like museums, packing your bags and moving to Northwestern Arkansas may just be the ticket. The pilot program, Life Works Here initiative, is designed to attract remote workers who can fill many vacant positions and reduce the shortage of professionals and entrepreneurs, especially in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) jobs. If you’re accepted, you’ll receive $10,000 to help with expenses and they’ll even give you a mountain bike to enjoy all the trails (or a street bike to get around town, if you prefer).
So if this has your attention, there are several application requirements. You must be at least 24 years old with two years of work experience and available to move within six months after acceptance. Plus, you need to have a full-time job and/or be self-employed and be able to work in the U.S. And if you already live in Arkansas, unfortunately, you’re disqualified from applying.
Savannah, Georgia
Savannah has a relocation program specifically for people who work in the field of tech. You’ll need to have a minimum of three years of verifiable experience to qualify. Savannah is flexible on the type of tech job you have as long as you are a remote worker, self-employed, or are able to land a job at a tech-based company within Chatham County, where the city of Savannah is located.
The other requirement is that you sign a lease for at least one year or take the leap and buy a property. Once you’ve been in the county for a month and have a Georgia driver’s license and meet the other requirements, you can apply and qualify to receive up to $2,000 in moving expenses.

Topeka, Kansas
The capital of Kansas, Topeka, is offering a similar type of program to attract new residents and workers to the city. If you land a position with a Topeka-based employer you can receive benefits as high as $15,000 if you purchase a home or $10,000 if you choose to rent. If you’re a remote worker, benefits are calculated differently but you can receive between $5,000 to $10,000 in benefits.
The requirements are few but you must be eligible to work in the U.S. With $300,000 in funding for this program, they plan to accept around 60 applicants for this initiative.
Tucson, Arizona
If living in a city with a multitude of restaurants, shops, cultural offerings and plenty of outdoor activities in the desert sounds like a dream, consider the city of Tucson. Bonus: this city is known for numerous days of sunshine throughout the year. Remote Tucson has an incentive program to attract remote workers from all fields as a way to stimulate economic development. They offer around $7,500 in moving expenses, which includes relocation services, consultants to help look for housing either to rent or buy, free internet, and cool coworking options and discounts.
So what makes you eligible? Like most programs, you have to have the right to work in the U.S., be 18 years or older and be able to move within six months of acceptance. And if you already know how cool Tucson is because you live there, don’t bother to apply since that’s a disqualifier. After all, they’re looking to bring new people and talent to the city.
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Tulsa is recruiting people who are able to work remotely and commit to at least one year in the city. Their incentive program, Tulsa Remote wants to encourage you to consider packing all your belongings and moving with plenty of benefits, such as $10,000 in cash. Though they won’t hand it all over at once; they’ll offer some to help with moving expenses, such as a stipend, and the rest at the end of the year. Other benefits include co-working space in the center of the city and special rates for housing.
And if you’re contemplating staying put for the longer term, you can even apply the money towards a down payment on a house. So what’s the catch? You need to be at least 18 years old, have the right to work in the United States and have full-time remote employment and/or are self-employed.
