Here's a brand new nonstop flight on Viva Air Colombia. Fly nonstop from Miami to Santa Marta for $174 roundtrip.
Viva Air Colombia Adds Only Nonstop Flight Between Miami and Santa Marta
New nonstop service begins on December 18, 2018, and will be the only nonstop link between the two cities. Flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
The $174 roundtrip intro fare is available for travel starting in January through May. There are a few blackout dates mentioned through January 15, March 22-26, April 12-22, and April 20 - May 2, 2019, but I was still able to find this fare on a few dates that are listed as blackout dates. Intro fare may sell out for certain dates at any time, but must be booked by November 17, 2018.
Viva Air Colombia is similar to Spirit Airlines and follows the ultra-low-cost carrier model. Viva fares only include one small personal item up to 22 lbs. that must fit under the seat in front of you. Checked bag fees start at $35-$40 each way when purchased during online booking. Larger carry-on bag fees start at $40-$43 each way. There is a fee if you want to choose your seat, but you can get a free auto-assigned seat at check-in. There is also a fee to print your boarding pass at the airport so make sure you check-in online and print your boarding pass at home for free.
Viva also sells other fare classes that include bags and other amenities. VivaSuper fares include one checked bag and priority check-in. VivaMax fares include one carry-on bag, one checked bag, seat assignment, priority check-in and boarding, no change fees, and a free printed boarding pass at the airport. There is a charge for snacks and drinks onboard regardless of the fare you purchase.
If you understand what kind of ticket you are purchasing, this can be an excellent value for a nonstop flight to one of the most amazing regions of Colombia. Santa Marta is near Tayrona National Park, which is full of luscious jungle hikes and pristine remote Caribbean beaches. Currently, the only other way to fly to Santa Marta on other carriers is by taking a connecting flight via Bogota, which will take much longer and cost more even after adding in any necessary fees on Viva Air Colombia.
As an example booking, I found seats departing Miami MIA on Tuesday, January 15, returning from Santa Marta SMR on Tuesday, January 22, for $174 roundtrip.
