Isn't it a little early in the season for a nor'easter? Winter weather has decided to come early to much of the East Coast, even the South, causing headaches for travelers.
If you're one of the many passengers whose flight has been canceled or delayed, don't panic!
What to Do to When Winter Weather Ruins Your Trip
While you're powerless to change the weather, there are certain actions you can take before arriving at the airport—and while milling around the departure board—to minimize the disaster.
Below are a few tips to help you reach your destination, or at least recover your money.
If you're flight is scheduled for later this evening, arrive much earlier than usual. With schedules in flux, there's a chance you might be able to snag a spot on an earlier flight.
You may also ask to be rerouted through a different connecting city, if your original connecting city is battling the same awful weather. And, when booking future winter flights, remember to try and connect in cities that rarely see snow, such as Atlanta or Phoenix.
If you're going to be stuck at the airport indefinitely, here's your chance to splurge on a one-day lounge pass. Rebooking is probably a little less hectic, and won't have to wrestle anyone over access to the electrical outlet.
Can't get through to the airline? Track your flight on FlightAware for info on delays and cancellations.
Even if you didn't purchase travel insurance, you may already have some coverage through your credit card. Many offer compensation for weather delays and canceled flights, as well as cover hotel costs, including any non-refundable reservations in your arrival city.
Dragging yourself out of bed at 4:30 a.m. to stand in line at the airport is a little bit of a nightmare, but you're more likely to avoid delays when traveling on the first flights of the day.
When you're really in a pinch, consider other airports. If flights aren't budging at JFK, take the Amtrak to Washington or vice versa.
If your flight is delayed and you no longer wish to make the trip, or if your flight has been canceled, you may request a full refund.
