What's great on sandwiches and can fuel your next flight across the Pacific? Mustard seeds, apparently.

Qantas made use of a biofuel processed from Brassica Carinata, an industrial type of mustard seed, on yesterday's Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne. This was the very first biofuel blended flight between the US and Australia and something we're likely to see more of in the future.

The 10% biofuel blend results in a 7% reduction in emissions, with Carinata-derived biofuel capable of cutting carbon emissions by 80% across its lifecycle.

Not only does the production of Brassica Carinata provide a financial boost to local farmers, but the seed can be rotated between crop cycles, enriching soil, and reducing erosion.

Qantas will partner with Australian farmers to produce the country's first crop of biofuel seeds by 2020.
