Invest in a nice travel pillow, so you can catch some Zs. If you plan your flight right, sleeping is one of the best ways to pass the time. You’re going to want to also bring some kind of remedy for jetlag if you’re like me and don't adjust well. One that seems to work well is 1Above. It’s a little pricey, but claims to reduce jetlag by over 50 percent.
Apple iPads are pretty expensive, so if you’re looking for a tablet to stay entertained while traveling that isn’t going to break the bank, go for a Fire HD 8. The tablet is listed for $80 on Amazon and is occasionally on sale. The tablet can do just about anything in the world of entertainment that an iPad can do, including hosting apps like Netflix, Hulu, and Spotify. There's also a kid’s version that is only $20 more—it's even kid-proof to the point that Amazon will replace it if broken.
Imagine arriving to your destination abroad as fluent as a local. That probably won’t happen, but with Duolingo you can at least pick up a few quick phrases. The app is free and offers dozens of languages, including French, Spanish, and Russian.
Prefer to spend your long flight drawing your own pictures? Pick up a pack of sketch pads. These pads from Artlicious are great for quick doodles or your version of the Mona Lisa. You can get three in a pack for about $12.
Once again you probably won’t show up able to order every meal in the native tongue of where you’re visiting, but learning a few key phrases before your trip could come in handy. Lonely Planet offers phrasebooks in French, Spanish, Germany, and tons of other languages. Most of the books even come with a dictionary.
If you’re not shy or have a travel partner, play a card game. There are lots of games you can play in flight, like Rummy or War. Just make sure to keep the noise level down so you aren’t disturbing your neighbors.
